this track is my second foray using mixtikl, into music with a vaguely african flavour, and the title references kampala where I lived in 1969-1970 – so the music felt like the music I remember from that time, so in a sense, it sent me back to kampala…

this track is quite strange rhythmically, a bit of an odd tug of war between the sometimes unpredicatable bottle arps / cowbell arps / pin sharp arps and tinkling arps, which rotate strangely around the more constant “western” drum beat. I like the rough feel of the track, and once again, the absolutely brilliant “bells metals arps” pak comes through with a great set of voices, perfect for recreating your childhood memories of africa.

I love the way all of the arps work together, to form a beautiful, joyous, slightly asynchronous sounding orchestra of detuned percussion – it works for me, and I smile each time I hear it, recalling times at makerere university campus, swimming, playing squash and growing up in the most beautiful place on earth – uganda in 1969. a once in a life time mixtikl loop to remind me of a once in a lifetime life experience – back to kampala, the city, like rome, built on seven hills…indeed.
