about
a second foray into using the roland guitar synth as a classical instrument, but this time, using a looping pedal to enable multiple instruments - so this track is built up of flute, oboe, and clarinet parts, some of which are captured in a loop which repeats throughout the song, others are "live" improvised melodies and harmonies.
this piece was an experiment for me, it was one of the first times I had ever "looped" with the guitar synth, but specifically targeting classical instrument voices, and again, my ongoing affinity for the oboe in particular is obvious in this take.
the roland gr-55 is a somewhat idiosyncratic instrument to play, requiring different fingering techniques, or in extreme cases, even different reverb "rooms", to coax the very best qualities of the sampled sounds out. some of the sounds, such as the oboe voice, are very good just as they come set by the factory, others need a bit of help, or sometimes a lot of help, to sound right and to sound good.
but the oboe voice isn't particularly problematic in this way, and after a few weeks of playing the "oboe" on the guitar synth, I felt quite comfortable with it as a voicing, with the flute and the clarinet only just slightly less comfortable - so attempting a woodwind trio seemed like a good idea, and once again, it was an absolute blast to perform.
this is a live performance, where the earliest parts are captured in a "loop" and later melodies are laid over the top sometimes using flute, sometimes using oboe, sometimes using clarinet.
a very enjoyable day in the studio, and I think "synchrony" succeeds quite well even though it is a loop. luckily again, I was able to hone my skills on flute and clarinet, as well as my beloved oboe, as I was by this point in time, delving deep into the 20 minute plus recording that "concerto no. 1 in e minor for oboe and guitar" was becoming.
I plan on attempting some brand new classical pieces, probably using the guitar synth, at some point during 2014, so please stay tuned to this channel, and eventually, some new music should appear...
