the next entry into the category "west africa" is another new configuration for me - this time, it's a string quartet, but west african style. we have a steady bass and drum beat in the "bolon"i, which forms the low end and rhythmic backing to the core of the track, and then basically, three soloists - two "kora", one "ngoni".

I've worked with pairs of kora before, and here I reprise my normal configuration; one of the koras plays rhythmic patterns, while the other one plays "freestyle" melodic solos. In this piece, I've brought in another fantastic sounding west african stringed instrument, the beautiful sounding "ngoni" - and I've given it a prominent solo in the first half of the song.

It was very nice to have that extra textural shift, because the tonality of the ngoni is both distinctive and distinct from that of the two koras - so you can easily pick out the ngoni as the singular, distinctive voice of this piece.

I love soloing with these instruments, it's such an unbelievable joy, and putting together this quartet (a configuration I will absolutely use again - one of the nicest I've figured out so far) was a real delight, and I will be using this configuration many times in the future. In the meantime, I feel that "the king of buganda's hut" fits in very well with the existing west africa tracks, and I'm proud to be adding it to the "west africa" series.
