about

trouble in paradise (stafford)

duration: 1:54

tempo: 70 bpm

record date: 20130605

instruments:

1 ROOKS
2 CHURHORG
3 CYMBAL3
4 SNAREA12
5 GONG2
6 BOWDBASS
7 BIGDINK
8 ORCH7

the wonderfully ominous and threatening variable-pitch rooks really steal the show in this piece, I’ve used the rooks voice before, but never as part of a more “normal” composition. in this case, I’ve again split the band in half – four parts percussion (cymbal, snare, gong, bigdink) and four parts melodic / harmonic components (rooks, church organ, bowed bass, and orchestra). this technique seems to work out well, in this case, the “odd man out” is obviously the rook voice, which is very effective no matter what pitch I use it at – it just works!

a strange melody, veering from slightly mediterranean to slightly rolling stones at times, it builds up to a surprising high-speed trio of organ, bowed bass and bigdink, which is a very unlikely trio, but when they come in and have their brief but astonishing musical race (after the stones riff section) – which includes some odd-interval harmony leading up to the super fast section, you will absolutely know it. very “in your face”, and at the end of the song, the rooks really have their say – as they will.
