about

third tone from the sun (stafford)

duration: 4:26

recorded: 20140103

type: active

here we have a pureambient.com “first”, a nanostudio-produced track that was completed and mixed, and then taken into SONAR for further production, where guitars were overdubbed - this is the first time a nanostudio composition has had other instruments added to it. we believe that there is a huge potential in mixing up ipad produced tracks with more traditional instruments, and adding electric guitars and ebows to this track was a great way to test out the theory. personally, I believe it works very well indeed!

that said, the track itself gave me many headaches: an early complete mix from december 5th, 2013 was scrapped due to the guitars not being good enough. on december 29th, 2013, I re-recorded almost all of the ebows and guitars, and created another mix, which was immediately scrapped again on january 2nd, 2014. I recorded all new ebows and guitars on january 2nd, and was too tired and worn out to make a mix. on january 3rd, I got up early, went into the studio, and, you guessed it...scrapped the january 2nd guitars. on january 3rd, I played all new guitar solos and ebow solos once again, did yet another mix – and this mix is acceptable, so it’s the version you are now hearing...

I should note that the "detuned" ebows on the "chorus"were actually successfully recorded on december 29th, so they did not require re-making at any point there after – it was the solo guitars, and solo ebows, that were re-recorded so often. I simply was not happy with what I played, I needed to spend more time on the quite complex guitar sounds, and on january 3rd, it all finally came together in a way I could live with…at last.

I should also mention, that originally, and in several of the mixes made during late december, 2013, this piece did actually contain guitar parts playing the main signature / theme “octave” riff from jimi hendrix’s song “third stone from the sun” – but in the end, it was decided that the sections containing that riff just didn’t work well enough with the backing track, so the “octave” riffs were scrapped – which explains the title, yet, why there is no hendrix guitar “quoted” – it just didn’t work out :-).
