about

"the sinking of guemes island"

track: 06

recorded: 20140112

duration: 11:22

type: active / ambient

tempo: 68 bpm

chords: D G D A Bm A

mixer sounds:

01 Drums: Can
02 Mallets: Rotary Vibraphone
03 Drums: Tribal
04 Effects: Android Symphony
05 Textures: Big Metal

I decided that since the first five tracks were all quite ambient and quite atmospheric, that I would do something different for track six…and something different indeed it is. I intentionally tried to select sounds that would produce a more active sound – and that idea has mostly succeeded.

I was, at first, slightly taken aback with the way the track went, but after about two listens, I realised that I really quite like it; it’s very different from the previous five tracks, mind you – so that’s partially why it takes some acclimatisation, but over a few days of listening, particularly when heard in the context of the seven tracks that are currently complete – I realised that I really, really like the track – it gets stuck in your head, and you find yourself “hearing it” in your mind long after you finish listening.

and again, the song actually sounds like it’s topic: a disaster on pandora (the titles continue to be taken from the series of books by frank herbert and bill ransom, the “destination void” series) where hundreds of innocent people were brutally murdered when a submersible craft destroyed a populated, floating island – and to my ears, the last part of the piece, where the sound events become more sparse, separated from each other, are like the last fragments of the island slowly sinking below the surface – a very solemn, sad moment, and I think that the piece of music really fits the story surprisingly well – I am enjoying doing the titles first, and then working to “fit” the music to the story – very enjoyable indeed.
