about

slow (stafford)

duration: 12:20

type: ambient

”slow” is the very, very ambient prototype of a later piece entitled “slower” – it contains very similar sequences to slower, although the pieces are different – “slow” contains some sections that were omitted from the later piece, and it also has a different “build up”.

"slow" is based on "slow - prototype", and indeed, the first four minutes of "slow" is very similar if not identical to "slow - prototype", but then, the construction of the piece changes - and additional sequences are layered - one for the first four minutes; two for the next four minutes; and three for the final four minutes.

made in three sections instead of four and a half (as “slower” is) “slow” begins with that one long, very ambient sequence, over four minutes in length – which is then suddenly joined by a second long sequence so that the next four minutes and some seconds are made up of a duet of sequences that starts off with a bang...when the percussion enters, in other words.

finally, after around the eight minute mark, the third and final sequence is added, and the piece plays out over the next four minutes and some seconds. some very “music for films”-like synth voices are added during this much denser third section; and the piece moves from slightly disturbing ambient to almost terrifying dark ambient during the final section – with a glorious trio of synths taking us out of the piece in style.

“slow” is the prototype for “slower”, and when you hear “slower”, you will understand why I decided to make changes when adapting the track from “slow” to “slower” – but, I am glad that I did both, it was a way of learning, and I think both tracks are valuable parts of the dave stafford nanostudio catalogue - not to mention, welcome additions to my ambient catalogue, too.
