rev - perpetual grunge - live improv

track: 7

instrument(s) used: rev

recorded: 20141227

duration: 1:50

type: active

this was a throwaway sequence built during the recording of the previous two pieces, near the end of the session, I literally threw down this track, playing an odd chord sequence that was vaguely reminiscent of "perpetual change" by the band Yes, but the effect of the REV patch was so extreme, you would never really know it (hence the title - a grunged-up mini-version of "perpetual change"? - I think not!).

later, I made a copy of this short sequence, and dropped it into another track, and developed a truly strange alternate sound for it, which, when blended carefully with the original, created this remarkable active track. this piece really is a shock after the last two, you are thinking by then that rev is great for ambient, and it can't get in your face - until you hear "perpetual grunge" that is.

I love the absolute wildness of this, sounds so warped and strange that they do the oddest things to the notes you originally played, which to my mind, is a very good thing indeed. kudos to "output" for creating rev, I can't wait to spend more time under the hood, and to demonstrate the incredible musical range that rev has - this song gives us a hint, but there is so much more to come from "rev"...

rev uses four types of sounds, which are:

1) instruments
2) loops
3) rises
4) timed instruments

within each type, there are then categories of different patches.

in many cases, there is also an additional "effect" attached to each patch. instruments have their effects built into one or both of their "layers".

two patches were used on this track:

type: loop

category: factory

patch: pulses mid

effect: filter gate 1

type: rise

category: factory

patch: 4 bars + tail

effect: rewind
