rev - brantology - live improv
track: 03
recorded: 20150406
duration: 6:20
type: ambient
rev was output's inaugural product, and as soon as I saw the first announcement of it, even with it coming from a totally unknown company called "output" - I knew I was going to have to have it. it was reversed guitars, in the form of two reversed guitars, done by young George Harrison, on the early Beatles song "I'm Only Sleeping", that started my love affair with reversed sounds (particularly, reversed guitars, "backwards guitar" as I used to call it - clean or distorted solos being the best!) - and then as time went on, others used the technique to great effect, including Robert Fripp (who employed it on both 1970's "Lizard" album, as well as on the seminal "Larks' Tongues In Aspic" from 1973, and many other guitarists, besides Harrison and Fripp, have used reverse guitar in their recordings.
one of the best examples of that I've seen, was Adrian Belew's "pop" band, "The Bears", who came out with both Belew and second lead guitarist Rob Fetters, playing live "backwards guitar" as the main guitar parts of songs - it sounded absolutely AMAZING ! as soon as I could afford a Line 6 DL-4 - I got one. Later, I also picked up a Digitech Time Bender delay - many modern delays have a setting for "Reverse" now, which you can tap to a short or long tempo.
so to have an ENTIRE INSTRUMENT devoted to reversed sounds - well, that for me, was like dying and going to heaven, only to find that all of the music played in heaven, was always reversed, all the time! a happy discovery, I can tell you.
this was an early piece, a live improv not too dissimilar to the pieces made with "output"'s other piece of software (they just have the two products right now, REV and Signal) "Signal", which I have also recently added to my toolset.
as much as I love signal initially, and, I had good luck with it (please refer to the tracks "otherworld" and "netherworld" for a sample of what it sounds like) Rev, not too secretly, will probably always be the program I love the most out of the "output" products - well, at least until we see what product no. 3 is....
