This track has an odd genesis – instead of using the “empty “ template, I tried the “random” template – and as often happens, was just pretty disappointed by what mixtikl chose, and very quickly, I had deleted it’s choices one by one – and then, it was if I had the empty template again – I just started building my own track, my own way, using samples that pleased my ears and brain. although mixtikl took over the process to some extent, and the way it triggers the chosen samples, is truly one of the strangest "mixes" I've heard so far - dissonant, edgy, occasionally beautiful - always challenging.
so what should have been a random mixtikl created event, just became a dave stafford created event instead – and happily, that worked out really, really well. basically, I just raided sound banks where I knew I would get excellent sounds, in particular the “drone maker” pak, of course, but I did select some new sounds that I had not previously used, as well, which is always a good thing.
one of the few remaining elements from the original random mixtikl mix, “synstring low sparse chords”, I had kept in (because it’s a lovely sample) and in fact, I’d parsed one iteration out to four, I liked it so much. I also used for the first time, “water all around” – and I love the sound of water – so that really changed the character of the piece, too.
other new voices found their way into “random event” (which, ironically, at this point, was almost completely non-random…so the title becomes ironic!) such as “deep wide drone” and “low air ambience” – lots of lovely, unusual elements, that, when played back in this mix, are deeply satisfying as a generative piece - although I will say, it contains a fair degree of dissonance, so it may not be for everybody - you have been warned.
