"providence suite - movement no. 5 - purity"

the creation and assembly of “movement no. 5 – purity” was as straightforward as that of “movement no. 4 – atonement”, and in fact would read almost identically to the description of “movement no. 4” above; the only difference being that this movement consists of takes 6 through 9 from the march 24th, 2012 session, unedited and unaltered, simply “stitched together” to form a whole piece, otherwise, unchanged from the original live to digital recording.

please see the entry for “providence suite – movement no. 4 – atonement” for all of the technical details of how this track was created – the process was identical, the only difference being that “movement 4 – atonement” – uses takes 1 through 5, while this track, “movement 5 – purity” uses takes 6 through 9. both of the movements feature only the “ebow ensemble” mellotron voice, which was the audible mellotron voice used during the live recording of the nine takes.

the reason the nine takes are presented in two movements (rather than one) is simple, that was always the original intention, which I have honoured here: the first five takes, we considered, were faster, and more “active”, and it was the intention of john orsi and to add “active” percussion to the piece made from the first five takes, while we reserved the last four for a much quieter, more ambient piece, which john would then overdub with cymbals and other “quiet” percussion.

so movement 4 was meant to be an active, forthright piece, movement 5, an ambient, quiet piece. in both cases, the intention was for john to add percussion as described, send the result back to me, where I would then add “real ebows” on top of the “ebow ensemble” sound with percussion added.

unfortunately, the percussion parts were never recorded (as least, not insofar as I know), so the demos were never taken farther than this basic sound – but, the good news is, as demos, they sound amazing; as fully produced tracks, even more so – the “ebow ensemble” does them real justice.

as the shortest movement in the suite (well, actually “tied” for shortest with it’s closely-related “cousin” “movement no. 7 – transcendence”) I personally find “purity” to be the single most moving part of the entire suite, because it’s a bit quieter than “atonement” perhaps, or because so much beautiful “ebow ensemble” is packed into a quite short time span.
