about

"providence suite - movement no. 2 - redemption"

this movement could be considered to be the adapted, creative version of "grace" (and indeed, it was originally titled "grace and redemption" until the creation of the later pieces demanded that all the themes have single-word titles) - and it uses the same musical DNA, as the 16 tracks recorded on march 4th, 2012, in the very first recording session for what at the time was still known as "the orsi-stafford project" - later, to become the band "providence".

"movement no. 2 - redemption" uses 17 iterations of the same 16 takes, but the instrumentation is in varying combinations:

1 grand piano
2 "after glow" mellotron
3 "mk II violin orchestra" mellotron (strings)
4 "st. peter's choir ahs" mellotron (choir - stereo left)
5 "st. peter's choir oos" mellotron (choir - stereo right)

these instruments were then arranged in various configurations, starting with the simple, piano + "after glow" mellotron, carrying on to other various configurations, such as piano and "mk II violin orchestra" mellotron, or, piano and the "stereo choir" with no strings, or, all five instruments. the configuration changes from the first half dozen takes, where "after glow" is featured, onto the final 12 sections, where the variations are too complex to note here!

so "movement no. 2 - redemption" was a technical challenge, where "movement no. 1 - grace" was relatively simple, involving just solo grand piano to establish themes and melodies, "redemption" uses five different virtual voices, one from true piano, and four from the remarkable m-tron pro mellotron, to achieve it's unusual variations.

this piece pretty much exhausts the "grace" themes (since it is built from the same themes as "grace") it was realised, 22 months after the fact, in almost the exact way I had always imagined it would be - using the different instruments to present hopefully interesting variations of the existing "grace" themes.

the first two movements of "providence suite" represent all of the themes taken from the march 4th, 2013 session, which I feel set up and preface the final five movements of the suite just perfectly, without the first two movements, the rest would simply not have been possible, and it's the simple but strong musical ideas within the "grace" (and "redemption") themes that establish the feeling and mood of the suite - which then moves into some quite unexpected directions.
