about

on the cusp of yesterday

track: 47

recorded: 20161002 - 20161229

duration: 4:34

type: multitrack studio recording featuring electric guitar

"on the cusp of yesterday" was the final full song project of 2016, which I am just now finally uploading at the end of January 2017.

the piece was built up of four main tracks, which were:

1) a drum track suitable for overdubbing
2) a lively bass guitar sample, probably a rickenbacker of some description
3) a live keyboard take featuring the REV plug in for Kontact
4) a lovely violin solo sound, which is one of the nicest parts of the song
5) energy bow guitars - solos, really; clean variety, played through a delay patch which I believe is "pristine digital delay" - one of the H9's best delay sounds
6) clean chordal and lead guitar
7) a final guitar solo featuring a very complex H9 sound, which is some kind of automated square wave thing - it almost sounds like a synth, but I assure you - I played that solo live, on the guitar

so I had built up just the rhythm track, the three main components of it, the REV keyboard, the violin, and the bass and drums, and I decided to go ahead and start trying out some interesting H9 patches on the guitar - and for some odd reason, I chose to do the last solo first. so a few live takes maybe, and I got a good take that I was happy with.

then followed a long period where I did nothing; I listened to the song, with the rhythm track, and the one solo at the end - and nothing else.

finally, I went back in, and began to add clean guitars, choosing some odd chords, and then resolving along with the violin, on a really nice Cmaj7th chord in the first part of the song. then it was ebows, quite a few different attempts were made, until I had built up the lines that you hear.

the goal of course, was to work my way from the front of the song to the back, and somehow "join up" with the final solo. how exactly I accomplished that, I am not quite sure, but - I did. I managed to create a good cohesion that works OK.

I really like this slightly odd track, I choose a few odd notes and chords, and I like the fact that it features more clean guitars and clean ebow guitars. I also do like the strange automated solo at the end, it's really nice, and it's quite an exciting way to conclude the song.

it perhaps starts out a bit jazzy, but it's clearly more than that, and once it's underway, I am actually at a loss to say WHAT genre it inhabits. but I like it - and I think it a worth conclusion to the compositions of 2016 - if anything, it's almost like a very short, concise progressive rock piece, which in my mind at least, fits very nicely with the three larger pieces I did earlier in the year.

in any case, I hope you will enjoy "on the cusp of yesterday" at least half as much as I enjoyed making it - which was, immensely.
