one of the very first recordings made with my then-brand new roland gr-55 guitar synth. this is an improvised oboe solo played over a randomly selected loop of guitar playing backwards.

on top of the lovely reverse guitar sound, I give the oboe sound of the guitar synth a first real workout, coming to terms with the idiosyncrasies of the gr-55, but having an absolute blast creating this impromptu improvised oboe solo - the sheer joy of being able to "play" an oboe from the very familiar guitar fretboard, is incredibly liberating.

just a few short weeks after this improv was recorded, I began working on what became the first track on this album, "concerto no. 1 in e minor for oboe and guitar" and during the making of that piece, I honed my skill on virtual oboe further still - but this track, "st. alia of the knife" was the first, was the forerunner, and proved to me that I could master the somewhat peculiar techniques required to get good-sounding takes from the roland guitar synth.

it's always a learning process, but when that process spins off a track as lovely as this one, well, that is a gift - and I was extraordinarily happy about the sudden unexpected appearance of this track - a most fortunate take on a most fortunate day. I hope you will enjoy this brief glimpse at the beginning of the guitar synth learning curve - I feel that I got off to a pretty good start.
