night flight to mongolia

track: 02

recorded: 20140125

duration: 1:47

type: active

day one continued: korg gadget. my second project, started on the same day as “a third or less” but actually finished (a couple of times) later, this one I struggled with more, but in the end, I managed to capture the essence of what I was going for.

I may still have another go at another version of this (perhaps, an extended version, because if I have any criticism of this version, it’s that it’s a tiny bit too short) but we shall see. having said that, I do really like this piece, it has a strange urgency to it, that suggested a “night flight to mongolia”, and again, I used a similar technique to the way I did the first track: drum machine, bass synth, lead synths, ambient synth.

the song starts as if it’s in motion, it sounds like it’s been going on for a while – an effect that I have always like, as if it’s part of a continuum that I’ve happened upon, and we’re just hearing a short excerpt from that continuum…

I like the sort-of “pulsing” quality of the song, with various parts that pulse in different ways, but I also like the frosty, airy, chords that play in the background, along with an active drum part, a moving bass line, and various melodies – there is quite a bit of atmosphere in the background – particularly in the first part of the song.

then, quite suddenly, the ambient / atmospherics drop away, the song becomes more “bare bones” as I gradually removed elements until the song sort of intentionally reduced down, I take away more and more notes until there is literally nothing left – a new technique that I was trying, which worked reasonably well. I do wish it were a bit longer, but it’s also quite nice at this length, because it lasts long enough to intrigue, but not outstay it’s welcome.
