another unusual, bright, “happy ambient/tinkling ambient” piece, a mixture of elements from two excellent paks, “gen mix 4” and an old favourite of mine “bells metals arps” – I love both of these packs, and early pieces such as “embellishment” depended heavily on the quality of the samples in “bells metals arps”. the piece also has two other distinctive qualities that are definitely contributing to the “happy ambient” moniker: it is in the key of D major (the happiest key, in my opinion) and also, it’s driven by the use of an LFO (low frequency oscillator), applied as an effect to six of the tracks, which gives it that wonderful "amplitude modulation" or "tremelo" type sound.

there’s something about this piece that just resonates with me, I really like the odd chugging rhythm that is wholly created by the effects – previous to adding the LFO, the track sounded good, but as soon as I started “chopping up” the piece rhythmically – well, that was it – that was the key to “morphing mental metal” – the title taken from fragments of element names randomly selected but with an alliterative “m” theme.

I really like the combination of six modulated tracks alongside six that aren’t – and of those other six, two have no effects, and four are chorused, so again, that detuning, added to the rhythm created by the LFOs, added to the fact that the track is in the happiest of all keys, D major – all of this contributes to giving this piece a very upbeat, positive, happy feel – and I am glad to be producing music that is a bit more cheerful than it is serious – there is a place for this kind of ambience – and a lot of ambient can be dark and disturbing – not so in this case, a very positive piece of generative ambient.
