mithrandir (stafford)

duration: 1:19

recorded: 20131219

type: active

“mithrandir” is one of those tunes that just appears, on the surface, it seems totally unlike the “type” of song that dave stafford might compose and record.

but below the surface, these “types” of tunes are there, and very occasionally, they make an appearance, they bubble up to the surface.

it started out like so many, as a short drum track, I had originally intended to do a…more serious piece, but when I played a tentative, take one bass synth part – that was it, this song just HAD to happen. so immediately upon completing the bass, I started playing these…jaunty? silly? inane? melodies, using a couple of different synth voices, one with a lovely echo, another that was quite comical, and a third that is a go-to voice for me, a really nice distorted patch – and the harmonies and layout arrived almost instantly, the whole thing came together in just a day or two…and I liked it, so it stayed .

I then mixed and mastered it, and here it is – and a word about the title, most people wouldn’t associate a piece of up tempo, “happy” music with the character Gandalf, but I was thinking about the early Gandalf of the Shire, joking around and being quite lighthearted – so that almost doesn’t really explain the title, except to say – this is the cheerful side of Gandalf, that you very rarely see or hear J

I just like everything about it, how incredibly short it is, how bouncy the bass part is, and those goody synths – I mean, what other voice should I have used – they just seemed perfect. a very enjoyable experience, quick (and happy) composing for nanostudio.
