life chain unwinding

track: 05

recorded: 20140306 - 20140712

duration: 1:35

type: active

begun on June 5, 2014, this sprightly little tune evolved very quickly, and then, for some unknown reason, sat for many weeks, until I sat down to complete it on July 12, 2014.

the basic track was already blocked out, and most of the parts were recorded, but it still required some synth solos and other enhancements; I just wasn’t “happy” with some of the original elements, and the changes made in the July 12 session, all made a huge difference to the song.

I really enjoy the very “stereo” nature of this track, with the “organ” mostly to one side, and then one of the lead synths off to the other side, but with its delay echoes bouncing across to the other side – and that organ tone, it’s fabulous, totally classic Hammond sound – a sound I hadn’t expected to find in Korg Gadget (which is full of surprises, really!).

there are some “firsts” here in this track, the most notable of which is the use of odd sound effects, which occur very rarely, but they do add to the ambience and they also are incredibly stereo events, they are even a little bit startling when they first occur, and for some unknown reason, I have placed these funny effects at both the start of the piece and during the very quick fade/ending – but I do like the addition of the sound effects, they bring something very different to this piece – something a bit…odd – and why not?

any utopia fans among you will have immediately recognised the title of this piece as being a lyric fragment from a very, very cool Roger Powell (my keyboard hero!) song called “Emergency Splashdown” – a song that Utopia played in concert, but never made a studio recording of – Roger dealt with that though, by recording a studio version on one of his solo albums, but for me, I can’t forget seeing Utopia in 1977 for the first time (the “RA” tour!) and watching Powell play his portable keyboard, and singing this very powerful song…those words stuck in my head, it’s like he’s watching himself during this emergency splashdown, and he can see his whole life flashing in front of his eyes, everything is unwinding…hence, “life chain unwinding”.

short, concise and to the point, “life chain unwinding” was never meant to emulate Powell or Utopia, but I just love the imagery of that lyric fragment, and it’s certainly appropriate to the music, which very well COULD have been a Roger Powell creation – I am very proud of “life chain unwinding”, and korg gadget has really come through in terms of sounds – a really good mix of really cool synths went into this piece, and it shows in the resulting final mix presented here at long last.
