iridium flare (stafford)
duration: 3:26

"iridium flare" is a piece that has a long and complex gestation, beginning with a basis of bass drum and an arpeggiated rhythm track, early versions were characterised by lots of very over the top, high speed soloing (and at some point, I might well go back and try to capture some of the exuberance of those early takes - so this may not be the last version of this song that you hear!).
over time, a certain melody started to emerge, and the solos became a bit more refined, but I still wasn't entirely happy with the structure. then one day, just to hear what it might sound like, I played it back with two complete tracks of soloing - and of course, that melody appeared in both, and I suddenly realised what the song needed: two similar, sometimes identical, melodies, hard left and hard right, which join up for the main melody and then separate again to improvise the sections in between.
I particularly like the ending, where very, very briefly, the song shifts from minor to major, but then immediately slips back to minor - and ends on the minor. The two ringing notes that end the track in a long, long natural fade, are unsupported, the bass drum and rhythm track fall out just as the whole minor / major / minor end section is happening, leaving those two incredibly pure notes ringing beautifully into the distance.
I normally work quite quickly (unless I'm working on a multi-track piece, like the guitar pieces for "gone native") but with "iridium flare", I was very patient, day after day, I would work on the two solos, until I was happy with them individually and collectively - and getting them to work together took patience, patience and more patience. I am therefore quite proud of this piece, as it is more carefully considered, and the melodies and improvised sections in between are just as I want them to be, and this "ordered" version is far and away better than the original, over the top solo versions.
stay tuned for possible out take versions - possibly.
