ambient

elements used:

ambient octave harp chord micro 1_genelements 1 synth (16 iterations)
tuned noise_genmix1 (4 iterations)

back to ambient, back to a minimal approach, I think I was so stunned and so surprised by the “out of nowhere” jazz piece “cinematic lovers sway”, that I sought solace and familiarity by doing what I do best – creating ambient atmospheres. In this case, I’m using just two elements, laid out in a very simple way, to create a sort of “heavenly” feel, looking for a light, floating ambience which I think to a large degree, I’ve succeeded in finding with this piece.

it’s what I might term “tinkling ambient” – it does have a bit of cheeriness to it, it’s not sombre, it’s more upbeat but only in tonality, there is of course, as with the best ambient pieces – no beat, or no discernable beat anyway – and that is partially why it succeeds – I think, whether we are in the generative music arena or not, that often (not always, but often) the old adage “less is more” is a generally true and reliable guideline – and that’s why I often keep the count of elements down very low indeed – in this piece, down to just two.

nominally, quite a quick piece, it definitely fits better under the “happy ambient” and “tinkling ambient” banners, but despite it’s quick pace and apparent high level of activity – you still get an underlying ambient mood – which comes mostly from the cloud of beautiful reverb that I’ve enveloped the entire piece in; and partially from repetition.

mixtikl has some reasonably decent reverbs built into it, since I use it mostly for ambient music, they are essential, and now that I think about it – if there was one change I would make to mixtikl, it would be to add more studio quality reverbs to it’s palette of available reverberations. However – what is present already is more than sufficient (up to 9 seconds of reverb – that’s not bad at all!) for most uses, and I do have that decades-old tendency to drown some of the more ambient / loopy sounding pieces in a nice reverb – it’s just beautiful, and it’s a key player in the atmospheric nature of “heaven’s verandah I”.
