about

gong crazy

track: 07

recorded: 20140517 - 20140712

duration: 6.00

type: active / alternative

as explained in the previous song’s description (see “gong native”) this “song” was originally the second half of “gone native” – until I split it apart to develop the two pieces separately.

In the end, I really feel that the decision to split the song was absolutely the best one, and I think that each of the two tracks stands on it’s own merits – “gong crazy” is such a different song thematically, it’s mostly a bass guitar solo against a wonderful, ever-flowing background of tuned gongs, timpani, and gongs – with a tiny bit of guitar playing near the end of the song…

it’s the bass that dominates this piece, but for me, it’s the tuned gongs, which play in unison with the timpani, and then they play separately, in varying combinations, there are sudden silences, unexpected bass “fills” – and then, when you least expect it – the drums come in, and start working with the whole tuned gongs / timpani / gongs backdrop – it’s unlike any piece of music I have ever created.

sure, it worked OK as the end section of “gong native”, but I much prefer it now, I prefer both songs in their separate guises, and, I did have quite a few weeks development time after the split, so I could ensure that each piece stood alone fine, and didn’t feel like it was “missing” anything.

I do love to recycle music, and I love the way that one session has ended up creating three songs, when really, I was only trying to record ONE song – I think that’s fantastic, and I am really pleased with all three of these pieces (“gong native”, “gong crazy”, and the next piece, “return to peoria”).

“gong crazy” winds down to a nice chordal guitar part, which then gives way to a final gong accompanied by acoustic piano – what a suitable ending...
