I wanted to see if I could create a variant of “global cooling” that would sound significantly different, so as usual, the first step is to change up the tempo and the pitch, so I did that immediately – which changed the character of the piece immediately – and that was the start of this variation.

I had originally thought I would replace the “harmonics guitars” with some more active, melodic guitars, but I couldn’t find anything that knocked me out, so in the end, I left the harmonic guitars alone, and instead, flew in masses of unusual content – starting with synths, synths, and more synths, and eventually moving on to the addition of sound effects, extra guitars, and even, for the first time, a horn part – which was the last element added.

that horn part really changed things, because during bar 3 of the horn part (one iteration of “horn1_c3_080a_Ambient”), the horn goes to an odd note, which changes the feel of the entire song – an event that I could not possibly have “planned”, but when I heard it, I was overjoyed, because this just meant that it altered this version even more, so that it resembles even less, it’s original source, “global cooling”.

sure, it’s obvious that they are cut from the same cloth, but “global heating” is very, very deep, very complex, with an enormous number of musical events both subtle and bold contributing to it’s end flavour. I love this complexity, when you look at the mix screen, there are very, very few “blank” cells – I really loaded this one up, but I am glad, because it means that I was able to create a unique, unusual “version” of a very successful piece, giving me two awesome active generative compositions built from the same basis, but sounding very different to each other in the end :-)
