[field recordings by Dr. Chris Watson]

"geosonics featuring Chris Watson", is in some ways, the current "flagship" product of maker "soniccouture" (possibly my number one favourite software synthesizer / instrument makers of the moment) and there is more than good reason for this.

for one thing, the concept - field recordist Dr. Chris Watson travels around the globe, on land and under the sea, and, under the ice, making recordings of earth sounds, but not just sounds that the earth itself makes, but the sounds of animals, water, ice, fish, shrimps, limpets onwards to insects, swamps, deserts and the sounds of high tension wires, to name but a few, and soniccouture worked very closely with Watson to develop musical accompaniments for each basic sample (which are available unadorned or paired with their more "musical" options) that made the very best use of the raw sound - and the resulting package is both beautiful and sounds wonderful, too.

geosonics is one of my personal favourite samplers at the moment, and now that I've worked with it for a while, I can truly appreciate the beauty of the sounds, their organic qualities, the root samples which in themselves, are absolutely stunning, but when you "mix" them with the other content that soniccouture developed individually, for each one - you end up with an extraordinarily potent combination of samples and other sounds - which you have to hear to believe.

a product that is based on the earth, and the sounds the earth makes, is broken into four main "sections", which are:

ice and water
swamps
wires
wind

the geosonics byline is "sampling planet earth" and that pretty much nails it, each of these four categories is accompanied by a beautiful, natural graphic, and then of course, each contains many presets, alongside the ability to use just the core "earth" sounds or taking the option to mix them with musical sounds for a less organic, but still incredibly beautiful effect.

as this was one of my first pieces, I've kept things relatively simple, using two voices as one note "drones" and a third as my "soloist" although when you hear the piece, those terms will not mean much in the context of actually hearing the piece. so without further ado, please enjoy our first track utilising the extraordinary "geosonics" instrument; our geosonics debut: "another frequency".

from music for pcs: komplete samples - an eternal album, track released July 15, 2014
dave stafford: komplete - kontakt 5 - geosonics

instruments used (category / preset):

ice and fire - blue sky under ice
swamps - area 51
wires - another frequency

In this instance, "blue sky under ice" and "area 51" each were represented by a single note being held for the duration of the piece, while a melodic "solo" was then manually played atop the drone, using the "another frequency" voice, taken from the "wires" category of geosonics.
