free the people - now (for john) (lennon, arr. by dave stafford)

this is maybe the world's first "unintentional cover" - I did not set out to do a cover of john lennon's "bring on the lucie (freda people)" which comes originally from his 1974 album "mind games" (surely one of the most underrated of any solo beatles project). instead, the piece started like so many do - with a drum part.

then I put in a place holder bass part, just to see how the drum would sound with bass added. that place holder riff was a simple three note pattern, that is actually the chord progression of possibly hundreds of songs: C F G - G F C repeated endlessly.

I then realised that the track at this stage, sounded quite like john lennon's song, but I carried on with "my" song, adding the free flowing "glockenblocks" patch, a floating wave of cascading notes, upward and downward, which plays throughout the track.

so now, I had drums, bass, and swirly ambient background. I think it was at about this point that I decided that purely by accident, I had covered a classic john lennon tune. so I then recorded an organ part, with flanging and reverb, quite psychedelic sounding, to go along with the bass part - and that was it - song basically done. since it's not quite "bring on the lucie", I didn't think it would be right to call it by that title, so instead, I've used part of the lyric as my title.

I had to re-play both the bass and the psychedelic organ parts a couple of times until I was truly happy with them - in the end, I feel this track came out quite nice, and you can even sing along if you want. or silently, in your head: "stop the killing - now!!".

so - an accidental cover version. that's something new.

instrumental cover version

bring on the lucie (freda people) - john lennon:

(Alright Boys, this is it, over the hill)

We don't care what flag you're waving
We don't even want to know your name
We don't care where you're from or where you're going
All we know is that you came
You're making all our decisions
We have just one request of you
That while you're thinking things over
Here's something you just better do

Free the people now
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it now
Free the people now
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it now

Well we were caught with our hands in the air
Don't despair paranoia is everywhere
We can shake it with love when we're scared
So let's shout it aloud like a prayer

Free the people now
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it now
Free the people now
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it now

We understand your paranoia
But we don't want to play your game
You think you're cool and know what you are doing
666 is your name

So while you're jerking off each other
You better bear this thought in mind
Your time is up you better know it
But maybe you don't read the signs

Free the people now
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it now
Free the people now
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it now

Well you were caught with your hands in the till
And you still got to swallow your pill
As you slip and you slide down the hill
On the blood of the people you killed

Stop the killing (Free the people now)
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it now
Stop the killing (Free the people now)
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it now

Bring on the lucie
