about

cinematic trio

track: 36

instrument(s) used: the giant (piano & percussive sample instrument)

recorded: 20140505

duration: 6:04

type: semiambient

special note: because these three takes were recorded together, as a group or a set, we have intentionally "misplaced" this track here, normally, music recorded using sample based instruments appears on the "music for pcs: komplete samples - an eternal album" record, but in this case, we wanted to keep the three pieces of music recorded on may 5th, 2014, together in one session.

musically, and programmatically, it just does not make sense to split them up, sending one track (this track, number 36, "cinematic trio") to the "samples" album, and one track to the synth album (the previous track, number 35 "abandoned reactor") and well, finally, and very confusingly, one track (the next track, number 37, "truth gradually washes away..."), would have no logical home at all, since it's half synth and half sample based!

in any case, we have decided to publish this one sample instrument based track here on the "music for apps: komplete synths - an eternal album" record, it just makes more sense to do so. we felt it was important to state, for the record, that this is not a "synth" in the true sense of the word, but, these three pieces of music, tracks 35, 36 and 37, absolutely were recorded together, and were intended to be listened together - so for that reason, we've allowed them to stay together, rather than be split up.

so - this intruder from the world of samples, arrives with it's beautiful ambient piano, piano strings, and percussive sounds, and of all of the "constructed" sample instruments within komplete, "the giant" is fast becoming one of my very favourites, because it combines the ambient and not-so-ambient activity around pianos, with the regular piano sound - so you get wonderful hybrid moments where an eerie, ghostly lost-in-reverb piano is playing a mysterious melody but suddenly, you hear various clanging and banging sounds, the sound of a metal piano stringboard being struck perhaps - who knows, but whoever created "the giant", did an amazing job.

one of my very, very favourite aspects of the instrument is their use of the sound of the piano strings, back when I had a real wood and metal piano, I spent hours playing the strings with my guitar pick, or my fingers, or even hitting them with mallets or other objects - piano strings simply sound amazing.

this piece is essential to the trio of tracks recorded on the day, since in the next track, tracks 35 and 36 will be combined, so - part absynth synthesizer, part, "the giant" sampled instrument - to create a wonderful hybrid sound, bringing the best of both worlds into the final part of the trio.
