this piece favours both the GenMix1 pak as well as one of my favourite instruments to use in mixtikl, the electric piano – in a huge range of guises. The result is a complex, mesmerising piece of generative ambient music – and, I also added specialised effects to every single row of cells – reverbs, amplitude (in the form of auto panning), chorus, and filter – picking effects that would increase the dreaminess, melt the pitch a bit with some chorus…(which effects both some of the bowed glass cells and some of the EP cells) – and I’ve really taken with the autopanner too, often, I will create multiple “rows” of the same instrument – say, bowed glass – if there are three rows of one patch – I send one of them hard left, the next, hard right, and the third, dead centre with auto pan turned on. so you get them in “stereo” and a third one, wandering back and forth across the stereo field – why not?

of the more complex pieces I’ve worked on, this one stands out as really having an utterly unique “mood”, and I think that’s down to all the careful selection of effects, the use of the auto pan, and the selection of instruments – that GenMix1 sound pak is a beauty, and I must remember to visit it more often in future. I love the “bowed glass” sound (obviously, since I used it 15 times in this composition) but I felt that this was what it needed – and when I listen back, I believe I was right!

“bowed glass / saw fizz” takes it’s name from two of the voices used to create it, but those elements, combined with a broad selection of carefully effected electric piano events, has created an utterly unique generative ambient track.
