about

avalanche of emotions (stafford)

duration: 8:01

recorded: 20140108

type: active / ambient

a new piece for the new year, 2014, and this piece brings together the worlds of active and ambient very nicely - first of all, it's based on a unique concept: 17 consecutive hits on a ride cymbal, followed by 17 hits of drum silence; followed by 17 hits on a ride cymbal - this utterly minimalist backing continues for most of the song, except for the ending, where momentarily, in a very ambient way indeed, all hell breaks loose.

so - a piece based on 17, and after the drum part was set up, I first added the bass, using a whistling style patch, to give a sort of theremin-like effect, and then, I added a melody synthesizer, which I later edited down and interspersed with an ambient synth with a beautiful "no attack" voice named "prickly heat" for some reason - a really beautiful sounding patch, so the ambient part keeps the solo synth from getting too busy,

then, similarly to a hidden track on an album, this song has a hidden ambient reprise, so after 3 minutes of silence, you get to hear an alternative view of what the song is made up of - randomly set pieces of synth had been moved off to the side during work, and instead of deleting them as I normally would, I attempted to arrange them into a small, quiet piece of ambient music which would mirror the larger piece - so you get a synths-only ambient reprise of the song at the end.

I really enjoyed working on this track, I spent a couple of weeks tinkering with it and I think it was well worth the time - a worthy addition to the eternal album :-)
