auntie meat

track: 65

I worked on this piece for about a month, and it went through at least 9 iterations to reach the version you are now hearing. this was originally inspired by listening to the sped-up guitar solos from the album "Uncle Meat" by Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention, and hearing those led me to begin this piece - which started with an outstanding rhythm track, I love the bass and drum parts especially - the bass is just outstanding - one of my best performances on my beloved apple "paul mccartney" style bass.

but the sped-up guitars - which all run at double speed, exactly - so twice as fast as I played them - were my joy, and I copied and pasted, I looped, I did anything and everything I could to turn this into an incredible tribute to Frank and "Uncle Meat" and I think it's turned out extraordinarily well. if you listen to the original album, Frank was merely using the sped-up guitars to "play" guitar riffs that his fingers couldn't quite manage - yet. later, Frank's actual playing actually far exceeded the speed and dexterity of these sped-up guitar parts from the late 1960s - but I think that is a perfectly valid thing to do - I can't play this part myself, or rather, I can play it, but only slowly...so I will use my tape recorder to speed up the guitar and then I will have the exact riff I am hearing in my head - that my fingers just cannot quite do yet.

creating this piece was a real journey, but what I have arrived at in the end, exceeds my wildest wishes for this song - I think it's a triumph for what is capable with virtual instruments, and Garage Band in particular - for a complex, active, multi-track song - this may be my Garage Band "masterpiece". we shall see.
