atlantis rising - original drums mix (stafford)

duration: 6:48

type: active

an alternative version of my first-ever nanostudio piece, I had really liked my original, non-effected drum track, but I also really loved the heavily-treated / effected drum kit in the final version, so I decided to create a special alternate mix that used the original, non-effected drums in place of the heavily flanged and treated kit.

as noted previously, this was my very, very first piece made with nanostudio; started in the traditional way, with a drum track, but a drum track that I spent a lot of time customising – so once the drum part was finally finished, I began overdubbing – first it would be solos, placed in various spots, later edited down...

then it would be bass parts, washes of chords using beautiful eden synth pads, all in support of those wild, incredible solos – all of which were played on the screen, I might add – this was done long before I had the luxury of using a full sized keyboard with my apps. when I hear the speed of the solos, and I realised I actually had to play them on the relatively tiny ipad screen - it's difficult to believe.

I think this piece is characterised by those very fast, very warped-sounding eden synth solos – what a wonderful sound, the eden synth is the hidden gem of the ipad – it’s not out front like many synths, but right out of the box, it just sounds great – all of the sounds in this piece are stock sounds, unaltered by me – I chose a voice, and started playing…and the result is what you hear.

for my very, very first song done in the app, having no idea how anything worked, I think this piece holds together very well, I use two different, distinctive solo voices well, and in this version, having the original non-effected drums restored, in stereo, sounds wonderful – oh, and I also love the “strings” sound – I am so glad I did that overdub, because that beautiful synth “wash” just glues the piece together so, so beautifully – ties everything together in a wonderful way – what a great instrument the eden synth is, I love it!

a quick and lovely fade ends “atlantis rising” perfectly – I couldn't ask for a better ending...and I think it's nice to have both the standard version and this special re-mix, available to compare and contrast.
