once again, a piece comes together very quickly, in a most unexpected way – this one, a bit of spooky vocal with a strange march beat, wonderful synths, wonderful horns – my second jazzy piece – but, the minute the rough form was in place, and I heard it – I knew what it was: it was “across the veldt (burning)” – I could absolutely see the pictures, this had an incredible visual feeling, of africans moving across the veldt, in a drought, I could feel the burning heat – the sound of the song, marching feet, heat, the relentless sun – it’s all there, and I have no idea how I did it – it just happened.
the long, wonderful horn parts, woven so carefully with the pipe and vox sounds, and then the syn5 and the monosynths coming into play – the wonderful world beat drummers – and that’s it – a beautiful march, a never-ending journey across south africa – and a few days after I created this, strangely, I saw a program wherein they visited the veldt – and it was really very cool to see what I had just blindly written about, in the flesh, the veldt is an amazing type of landscape, and in my song, the parched, thin, africans are marching, marching, and marching some more…across the veldt.
in a similar way to the surprise that was “cinematic lovers sway” – this is a very distinct piece, with a slight hint of xtc’s “procession towards learning land” even – just a wonderfully unique and utterly evocative piece, and I feel blessed that it appeared while I was at the steering wheel of mixtikl – and the app gets most of the credit for this one, my part in the process was “listening in amazement” – I really love this application, the more I realise it can do, the more I love it…
