hello and welcome to the eternal album, “music for apps: notion”, which of course features the absolutely stunning app "notion" - an application that is a must have for serious composers everywhere - I've wanted the app for a long, long time, so I have finally taken the plunge - and I am really, really enjoying using notion - it's very satisfying, and you can instantly trial your changes, so far, I am finding it to be an extremely well designed application.

a lot of notion's users are classical musicians, teachers, and so on, but, notion isn't just about classical music (although it supports classical notation in an incredible way - especially when you consider that it''s on a tablet device - absolutely remarkable) - electronic musicians can use it, even ambient musicians such as myself can use it.

tt was my good friend and business partner ken mistove (and musical partner in saffron matted voids) who encouraged me to pick it up - and he was right, it is the best app for notation, the quality of the samples is uncanny, and I have already learned about an enormous number of gaps in my knowledge of notation - but that's the beauty of it, I am finally learning all the terms and functions of the written language of music.

of course, I've been able to read music (slowly at least) to some extent since I was a child; notes and note values are fine, and so on, and I do understand intervals and chords, harmony, melody, counterpoint and so on...but now, I can teach myself all the mysterious details of notation at my own pace - and so far, the only other app that does this is one of my favourite apps, itablapro has also been incredibly educational - so, that's two really well written apps, that let you learn a particular musical craft as you create beautiful music - what more could you ask for? that is brilliant!

but the beauty of notion is that as I create music, each time I start a new piece - I begin to learn what to do and what not to do with the app - which actually translates into, what to do and what not to do when composing using classical / standard notation. most of my musical life has been about improv, and perhaps my weakest area has been getting serious about learning theory and notation to a better degree than I currently do. with these apps, notion and itablapro - you can learn over time, at your own pace - and you end up with music, too!

that means too, that the much-lauded developers of notion have done their homework, and while at first, the interface looks a little busy, what they have done is beautifully implement that quite complex world of notation: time signatures, expression marks, tempo, it's all there, and it goes deep into the minutia of triplets, tuplets and so on - I was utterly blown away by the level of detail and complexity present in terms of completeness - they have worked hard to include everything that a composer might need - and they continue to add more as users come up with new ideas and suggestions - it's clear that they are listening - always a good sign!

I agree with the positive reviews, the developers have done an AMAZING job on this app - one look at the version history tells the story: massive updates, over and over again, feature adds like crazy - this is an incredibly mature application.

and it shows - I have managed to learn the basics without cracking the manual, most of it is very intuitive, and over the course of a couple of days, I was able to create my first piece of music without much issue - so it's clear that they have listened to their users and customers, they have dealt with issues and requests in a thorough and responsible way - why can't all developers be this good? :-)

I am very pleased to be bringing another eternal album on line, this time, it will be a real mix of acoustic guitar work, classical work, I am going to attempt some ambient pieces - but mostly, I want to write music - it's about time I started - so - hang on, here we go...

and now - to the music!

dave stafford: notion application

all tracks composed, scored, arranged, engineered, recorded, mixed, mastered and produced by dave stafford for pureambient records.

all instruments and sounds by dave stafford.

technical note: approximately four seconds (or more) of silence has been added to the end of each recording, to allow for any running order that you, the customer, desires (since this is a completely user-configurable album); this added silence in no way affects the quality of the tunes.

it's also advised that this music be listened to through headphones to experience the full stereo effect - we feel that the tracks are best experienced via headphones; in stereo - if this isn't possible, then the best available stereo speakers will have to suffice.

finally - thank you for listening!
