stained glass I - live improv

a new touch controlled application, requires a new way of playing, and this app is unlike any I have ever seen or used. it works with between one and three fingers, which are placed on any black and white image, or any black and white video feed - and the contrast between the black and the white, the light and the dark - is what drive's the apps sound-producing engine.

yes, it's odd to have controls marked "scan rate" and to realise that the sound of the app changes fairly radically if you indeed, increase the scan rate - and in fact, most of the parameters of the controls have to do with the image, how it's scanned, and so on - and not the usual "music" related buttons and choices.

that in itself is refreshing, but in a way, I don't really care that much how it works or why it works - I'm just glad it does, because the sound that comes out of VOSIS - if you play it with care - can be anywhere from intensely pure and very, very beautiful, all the way down to rumbling, distorted, uneasy dark ambient grumblings.

in my first piece, using an image of a stained glass window that I happened to have on my tablet, I think I run the gamut of those various parts - very ambient, very active, dark, and, everything in between.

I love the sound of VOSIS, I relate to it immediately, and I must admit, I enjoy the process, and sometimes, I would just hold position, once i found a sound I really liked, I would freeze, unmoving, with my three fingers held in some unknown pattern, generating the purest tone you've ever heard. and then, eventually, I let go, and move to another area of the image - and the sound changes once again.

I really enjoy playing this unusual ambient instrument.
