concerto no. 2 in a minor for guitar and oboe - movement no. 1

(note - this same track also appears on the pureambient album SSDL1747 "classical - an eternal album" as track 11)

track: 02

recorded: 20140322 - 20140323

duration: 3:43

type: active

for my second piece, I threw caution to the winds, and added in a fairly daunting cast of instruments (see "track credits" below for the full list). no more simple duet, no more simple harmonies, this is full on scoring - with two days of experience.

it took me about two days to knock this into the shape that you hear here, and a couple more hours of work to iron out some mixing issues that gave me some real grief (hence, the one week delay from completing the composition, to finally uploading a week later - until today, I could not feel happy with any previous mixes - but now, I have a lovely, clean mix with the barest hint of reverb.

as I always do, I just improvised the composition of this, there is never a forward plan, but, I knew I wanted to use guitar and oboe again, for this successor to my "concerto no. 1 in e minor for guitar and oboe" composed a few years ago - not with notion, but note by note, phrase by phrase, using a guitar synthesizer. hard work, but, I loved the result, and I felt that it is now about time for a successor.

so - a new piece, this time, nominally in a minor, using guitar and oboe - other than that, I didn't have much of a plan or schematic for the piece - I just started putting notes down onto notions screen (I almost said, onto paper!) - but that is exactly what it feels like - really writing it down, dot by mysterious dot.

I learned an enormous amount in this process, and progressed to such techniques as arpeggios, triplets and how to add in chord names - this is such an incredibly versatile application, and I feel so comfortable with it - too comfortable - and I do tend to end up sat for hours on end, trying to perfect each measure - and - why not?

in any case, while the instrumentation is somewhat similar to my first concerto, this piece bears no kinship to it beyond that - and I have sprinkled this piece liberally with celestes and pianos and other instrumentation as took my fancy, then spent quite some time tidying up note overruns and odd sounding measures - really just down to lack of experience - until the piece sounded right to my ears.

at some point, I will upload the piece to the "classical" album as well, but I want to keep everything made with notion, on the notion eternal album - so this will be the first music to span two eternal albums.

I will probably wait until the next two movements are written and recorded - and at this point in time, not a single note exists of either , so I have that process to look forward to. assembling this piece was a great joy, I love this tool, and I cannot wait to expand this album with a number of very different compositions spanning a range of styles - including more classical, but also many others - "notion" is so very capable, and I am looking forward to gaining the experience I need, to carry on creating pieces of greater length, complexity, and hopefully, beauty.

what a wonderful tool notion is, I feel so lucky to have such an amazing app with which to compose - it's simply brilliant!

movement no. 2 and movement no. 3 forthcoming later in 2014.
